OUR MISSION

The Herb Kelleher Entrepreneurship Center (HKEC) is a hub for students of any background, classification, or field of study at The University of Texas at Austin that aims to ignite the spark of innovation within Longhorns. At the HKEC, we are all about unlocking entrepreneurial potential and guiding students as they explore paths as trailblazing founders or visionary change-makers within established companies.

The first step in accomplishing this is by encouraging students to discover the boundless possibilities of the vast network of university-wide entrepreneurship and startup resources. Additionally, through our innovative curriculum guided by seasoned entrepreneurial leaders, students gain the cutting-edge education needed to succeed in today’s dynamic business landscape.

But it’s not just about knowledge – it’s about community. The HKEC engages students with a nexus of Longhorn leaders and fellow students who embody the entrepreneurial mindset, providing space to forge lifelong connections. What’s more, we believe in learning by doing. That’s why we provide a safe, low-risk environment for students to put their skills into action, empowering them with real-world experience that sets them apart from the rest.

Named for the founder of Southwest Airlines and inspired by his unwavering dedication to positive change, the Herb Kelleher Entrepreneurship Center makes it our mission to help students’ visions take flight.

Meet Our Founder: Herb Kelleher

“I endowed the Herb Kelleher Entrepreneurship Center as a devout believer in the excitements and in the rewards of entrepreneurship for job seekers and for America.”

The Herb Kelleher Entrepreneurship Center was founded in 2001 to provide resources to others with an entrepreneurial spirit and encourage innovation; Herb Kelleher's (1931-2019) vision and passion for positive change are reflected in the center, both in name and spirit.

In 1967, Herb founded Southwest Airlines. Prior to this, flying was a luxury and only those that were wealthy or traveling for business used airplanes. With the start of Southwest Airlines, the industry changed. In 1968, competitors sued to keep Herb Kelleher's new airline grounded. After a three-year court fight, the first plane took off from Dallas. Today Southwest Airlines operates nearly 4,000 flights a day.
